Prayer service planned as auto auction reopens after fatal crash


MORNING WITH THE SPECIAL CEREMONY HAPPENING IN JUST HOURS. REPORTER: RANDY, A PRAYER SERVICE WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE START OF THE AUCTION THIS MORNING. THE FIRST TO HAPPEN SINCE A DEADLY CRASH HERE ONE WEEK AGO. LEEZANDRA APONTE OF LOWELL AND BRENDA LOPEZ OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, WERE AMONG THE THREE PEOPLE KILLED IN THAT CRASH. LAST WEDNESDAY, AN S.U.V. SUDDENLY ACCELERATED THROUGH A CROWD OF BUYERS AT THE LYNNWAY AUTO AUCTION. THE JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE THEN SMASHED THROUGH A CONCRETE WALL. THE CAUSE IS BEING INVESTIGATED, BUT THE D.A. SAYS IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT. THE 76-YEAR-OLD DRIVER OF THE S.U.V. HAS NOT BEEN CHARGED. THE COMPANY PLANS TO MAKE CHANGES FOR SAFETY’S SAKE, INCLUDING INSTALLING VERTICAL BARRIERS TO SEPARATE BUYERS AND CARS. THE POSTS WILL NOT BE INSTALLED TODAY. THEY WON’T BE READY TODAY, BUT JERSEY BARRIERS WILL BE IN PLACE, AT LEAST AS A TEMPORARY SOLUTION. ALSO, THE COMPANY IS GOING TO HIRE ADDITIONAL POLICE AND FIRE DETAILS. THOSE WILL BE IN PLACE TODAY.
